Snickers was right, You are not you when you’r hungry

Remember the Snickers advertisment ? They are right some of us are just not the same when we are hungry.Come to find out, it may be the one advertisement that has some real truth to it. Now we have scientists backing this claim up.

In general I’m a pretty laid back, go with the flow type of person. Then it happens “Hangry” hits! I go from a chill person and then, I turn into a silent, irritable freak of nature. Inside my mind I turn into a very angry Italian who curses like a sailor. Curse words and hand gestures included. lol …

Even though I stay silent in this time every one around me can feel the shift. My husband is a saint for putting up with me in these moments and he can usually feel it happening before I do. When he feels it coming, even if we are out of the house, he will start the search to find me some food. ( Bless his heart )

It’s not fun for those around me ( Sorry and thanks for still loving me. ..lol ) and it is not fun for me either. I know it sounds a tad bit dramatic and you are probably thinking, come on its not that bad. I beg to differ my friend. I can realize that something is off about me and I do try not to let it effect me, but alas…sometimes it gets the better of me.

In these crucial moments of hangriness it feels like nothing is beautiful and I don’t care if you’r jokes made me laugh yesterday, nothing is going to make me laugh in that moment. I start walking around like a hungry panther stalking their prey. Everyone and everything is in danger of being eaten until I get food. No need to panic I do refrain from eating every one, I know eating people is wrong. Also discusting…Eww lol

All jokes aside, it has been proven that different people experience different side effects to being hangry. Some might feel tired they just want to take a nap, others loopy and nothing they say makes sense because they are hangry and confused. There are those that cry at the drop of a hat, and some turn down right mean. While others get spacey and dramatic, and then there is me, the silent angry Italian that curses inside my mind like a sailor. If this sounds familiar to you and you too have experienced being hangry, there is hope for us all. ( YAY )

A group of researchers in Austria recruited 64 adults ranging in age from 18 to 60 to record their feelings of hunger and emotions 5 times a day for three weeks. This study is new in the way that it monitored their feelings as they went about their daily routines and not in a lab. Ladies and gentlemen…the end result was being Hangry is scientifically proven to be an actual thing.

Scientists say that the release of cortisol can cause aggression in some people. Mix that with low blood sugar that’s interfering with our higher brain functioning, such as those that help us control impulses and regulate our primitive drives and behaviors. If your blood sugar gets low it triggers a cascade of hormones including cortisol ( a stress hormone )and adrenaline ( the fight or flight hormone ) These hormones are released into our blood streams to re-balance our blood sugar. They also give some of us different side effects to being hangry. Some of them are as follows:

  • Fatigue
  • Sleepiness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Poor coordination
  • Susceptibility to making mistakes

Becoming hangry is not necessarily cause for alarm if you are otherwise healthy. However, people who have health concerns should take steps to prevent hanger. This includes people who are on multiple medications, those who have medical conditions, and those who are underweight or malnourished. Those who have metabolic stressers such as diabetes, pancreatic or liver disorders, and adrenal insufficiency syndromes.

  • Eat several small meals during the day or make certain that Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are fulfilling and nutritious.
  • Avoid junk foods
  • Heave healthy snacks on hand, just in case
  • Exercise regularly
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Stay hydrated

If you are finding yourself prone to sudden outbursts of hangriness, take this steps to control or prevent it. Your body, family, friends and loved ones will thank you.

My wife gets “hangry” and she is a dramatic one who tends to cry about everything. Might I add that she doesn’t stay silent 😶 good pointers from now on Ian keeping snacks with me.

  2. Praise God for we are all safe 🙏🏻😂😆🥳 I am pleased to hear that you know eating people is absolutely wrong. I get hangry often almost daily because of my job I am always on the go without time to take a lunch. I too will start to have healthy snack options.
